Authorities have provided further insight into the devastating crash that occurred on Tuesday on Highway 93 near Lolo, involving a Missoula County sheriff’s deputy and a Ford Focus driven by an 81-year-old man.
The Montana Highway Patrol revealed that the fatal collision took place at the junction of Old Highway 93 and U.S. Highway 93. The Ford Focus, driven by Gaylord Angst of Florence, was heading eastbound when it turned left at a stop sign, crossing into the path of the southbound patrol car. The impact occurred on the driver’s side of the vehicles.
Tragically, Mr. Angst succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The sheriff’s deputy, a 35-year-old individual, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula for treatment.
Following the incident, Angst’s body was transferred to the Montana State Medical Examiner’s Office for a thorough examination.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has officially identified the deceased as Gaylord Angst, an 81-year-old resident of Florence. In a press release, Sheriff Don Bell extended heartfelt condolences to Angst’s family and all parties affected by the tragic events.

As a result of the fatal collision, both northbound lanes on Highway 93 south of Lolo have been blocked, causing disruptions to traffic flow in the area. The Montana Department of Transportation has reported that the incident occurred approximately 3.50 miles south of Junction US 12 West-Lolo, at mile-marker 80.
Montana Highway Patrol swiftly responded to the scene following the crash, which was reported around 9:34 a.m. An investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision is currently underway to determine the root cause of the tragic accident.
