Accident – Death – Obituary News : RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A 14-year-old girl accused of fatally shooting her mother and injuring her step-father in Rankin County made a court appearance on Tuesday, May 14th. Carly Madison Gregg, the teenager at the center of the tragic incident, faced a motion from her defense team to reduce her bond and exclude the public and media from the courtroom. The bond for Gregg, originally set at $1 million, remains unchanged.
The case has been adjourned until June 4, 2024, as legal proceedings continue to unfold following the shooting that took place on Tuesday, March 19, in the 200 block of Ashton Way.
Upon responding to the scene, authorities found the step-father with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He informed deputies that upon his return home, he discovered his wife, identified as 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Allegedly, his 14-year-old step-daughter, Carly Madison Gregg, was armed with a handgun.
Sheriff Bryan Bailey of Rankin County revealed that the victim recounted how Gregg shot him in the shoulder before he managed to disarm her. Subsequently, the teenager fled to the backyard and leaped over a fence. Additional deputies and the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s (MHP) helicopter were dispatched to the area, leading to Gregg’s apprehension shortly after 5:30 p.m. without any resistance.
Gregg was taken into custody and charged with murder and attempted murder. She is currently being held at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center as legal proceedings progress. During her initial court appearance, Gregg entered a plea of not guilty to the charges brought against her.
The Rankin County School District confirmed that Ashley Smylie was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School and that Carly Madison Gregg was a student at the same institution. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning as the legal process continues to unfold..
