Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Traffic Homicide Unit of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a tragic incident that took place on Tuesday morning, May 14, 2024, in the northeast area of Lakeland.

Authorities, along with Polk County Fire Rescue, were called to the scene of the crash at the junction of Moore Road and Old Polk City Road around 9:17 AM.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision: a vintage white 1970 Ford pickup truck and a red 2000 Sterling dump truck.

While the 60-year-old driver of the dump truck emerged unscathed from the incident, the driver of the Ford truck sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the driver, identified as 93-year-old Carl Medlin from Polk City, succumbed to his injuries at approximately 11:38 AM.

Prior to the crash, Mr. Medlin was travelling west on Old Polk City Road, while the dump truck was heading south on Moore Road.

Initial findings from witness accounts and evidence suggest that the dump truck failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection and entered the path of the oncoming Ford truck.

Both drivers had their seat belts on, although the Ford truck was only equipped with a lap belt.

The intersection had to be closed for about four hours to facilitate the investigation, which is still ongoing.

No citations or criminal charges have been issued as of yet, pending the completion of the investigation.
