In a recent incident in York, two individuals were apprehended by a York County sheriff’s deputy after a routine traffic stop on I-80 led to the discovery of two pounds of methamphetamine.

The deputy pulled over a vehicle on I-80 west of York due to several traffic violations. Suspicions arose regarding the male driver and female passenger in the car, prompting the deputy to deploy his K-9 unit, Justice.

Justice’s keen sense of smell detected a controlled substance emanating from the vehicle, prompting a thorough search by the deputy.

The search revealed not only two pounds of methamphetamine but also a collection of knives and drug paraphernalia within the vehicle.

During the search, the female passenger managed to slip out of her handcuffs and attempted to dispose of drug paraphernalia on her person in the patrol unit. Simultaneously, the male driver started banging his hand against the patrol unit window, causing damage.

The driver, identified as 36-year-old Andrew Juarez from Holdrege, was taken into custody on suspicion of possessing more than 140 grams of methamphetamine, carrying a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, failing to possess a drug tax stamp, criminal mischief, an auxiliary lights violation, having an open container, and possessing drug paraphernalia.

The passenger, identified as 39-year-old Sonia Martinez from Hastings, was also arrested on suspicion of possessing more than 140 grams of methamphetamine, carrying a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, being in possession of a deadly weapon as a prohibited person, tampering with physical evidence, failing to possess a drug tax stamp, attempting to escape, providing false information, carrying a concealed weapon, having an open container, and possessing drug paraphernalia.

Both Juarez and Martinez were subsequently detained in the York County Jail.
