Accident – Death – Obituary News : Kochi: Hill Palace police apprehended a 38-year-old man, identified as Ajith Shanmughan, for allegedly deserting his elderly father at a rented house near Eroor. The incident came to light when concerned neighbours discovered the elderly man left unattended on May 10 without food or water.
Ajith Shanmughan, a native of Idukki, resided with his bedridden father in the rented accommodation. However, he abruptly vacated the premises along with his family and household belongings, leaving his father behind. The elderly man, incapable of tending to his basic needs without assistance, was found in a deteriorating state by neighbours.
Upon receiving information about Ajith’s presence in Ernakulam, the police acted swiftly and apprehended him on Tuesday. He was brought in for questioning and subsequently arrested on Wednesday. The authorities condemned Ajith’s actions, highlighting his disregard for his duty as the primary caregiver for his father.
Ajith faces charges under the Maintenance & Welfare of Parent and Senior Citizen Act 2007, in addition to Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC. The welfare of the elderly man became a concern when neighbours noticed the rented house remained inaccessible for an extended period. The frail man, unable to even hydrate himself, was eventually rescued and transferred to Tripunithura taluk hospital for medical attention.
In a separate incident reported recently, Chennai police arrested a teenager and his accomplices for the murder of an elderly woman, Ponni, who had disclosed the teenager’s love affair to his parents. The tragic incident unfolded in Thiruvanmiyur, where Ponni succumbed to fatal injuries inflicted by the teenager and his friends.
The authorities emphasize the importance of caring for elderly family members and condemn acts of neglect or violence towards senior citizens. Such incidents serve as a reminder of the need for compassion and respect towards the elderly population..
