Over the weekend, two individuals were apprehended by the Fairfax County Police for allegedly pilfering a substantial amount of merchandise from Tysons Corner Center and Fair Oaks Mall.

The Fairfax County Police disclosed that detectives from the Tysons Urban Team (TUT), specialized in retail theft and other mall-related offenses, were alerted at 1:07 p.m. on Saturday (May 11) regarding a “retail theft” incident at Fair Oaks Mall (11750 Fair Oaks Mall).

Following the theft at Fair Oaks Mall, the group proceeded to the 1900 block of Chain Bridge Road in Tysons, where additional thefts were carried out, as stated in a news release issued by FCPD on Monday.

Both a 56-year-old man from New York and a 43-year-old woman from New Jersey were apprehended, while a 45-year-old woman from New York managed to escape the scene and is currently wanted for conspiracy to commit theft. Additional arrest warrants are being sought for her, the authorities mentioned.

During a search of the group’s vehicle, police uncovered over $15,000 worth of stolen goods. This trio has been linked to five theft incidents since February, including two on Saturday that led to their arrest.

Four out of the five incidents occurred in Tysons, with thefts previously reported on February 24, March 23, and April 13. In total, the theft spree resulted in the loss of goods valued at $27,000, the police revealed.

The man from New York faces charges of four counts of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, theft with intent to sell, and possession of a burglary tool. On the other hand, the woman from New Jersey is charged with five counts each of the same theft offense and possession of a burglary tool.

Both suspects are currently held without bail at the Fairfax County Adult Jail.

The arrests came shortly after another “retail theft team” was detained at Tysons Corner Center for possession of $24,000 worth of merchandise in their vehicle. Most of the items were stolen undergarments from Victoria’s Secret in Prince William County, according to the police.

During a recent presentation to the Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis highlighted an increase in larcenies and thefts in 2023 compared to the previous year, attributing it to a statewide surge in organized retail crime since 2021, as outlined in the department’s 2023 annual report.

Despite the rise in organized retail crime, concrete data on retail theft in the United States remains scarce and unreliable. The Council of Criminal Justice observed an uptick in shoplifting in certain cities, notably New York City and Los Angeles, since the onset of the pandemic, while most cities reported a decline compared to 2019.

In December, the National Retail Federation retracted a statement claiming that nearly half of the $94.5 billion in losses reported by retail stores in 2021 were due to “organized retail theft” after doubts were raised about the accuracy of the figure. An economist estimated that organized groups likely accounted for only 5% of the total losses.
