In a recent development, human remains discovered in 2022 by the Knoxville Police Department have been successfully identified using advanced genetic testing. The Knox County Regional Forensic Center, which was involved in the identification process, shared the details of this significant breakthrough.

The discovery of the human remains took place in a wooded area behind a house on Knott Avenue, with the Knoxville Police Department notifying the Knox County Regional Forensic Center of the finding in September 2022. While no foul play was suspected in the individual’s death, initial attempts to identify the remains were unsuccessful.

Chris Thomas, the Chief Administrative Officer of the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, emphasized the center’s commitment to identifying every decedent and connecting them with their next of kin. Despite the challenges posed by unidentified remains, the center’s team remained dedicated to the task at hand.

After exhausting traditional methods such as examining radiographs and dental ex-rays from missing individuals in the area, the forensic center sought the expertise of Texas-based Othram Inc., known for its proficiency in forensic genetic genealogy. Through their collaboration, the remains were positively identified as those of 34-year-old Tony A. Brown Jr. in March.

This breakthrough underscores the importance of advanced identification methods in cases where traditional techniques prove ineffective. The Knox County Regional Forensic Center has been instrumental in helping to solve numerous cold cases, including cases dating back to the 1980s, by leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as dental, radiograph, and DNA analysis.

Mayor Glenn Jacobs of Knox County commended the Regional Forensic Center for its exceptional work and acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the center’s skilled staff in resolving complex cases. The identification of Tony A. Brown Jr.’s remains serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the forensic center’s team.

As the forensic center continues its efforts to identify and bring closure to families of missing individuals, the community remains grateful for the tireless work and commitment of these dedicated professionals. The successful identification of the human remains found in Knoxville in 2022 is a testament to the power of collaboration and advanced technologies in solving complex cases.
