Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A police officer from Big Spring is currently hospitalized in Lubbock following a shooting incident that occurred early on Tuesday morning. The search for the suspect involved in the incident has been called off.

The incident took place at Crossroads Bar, located in the 3100 block of South Highway 87. At 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies from the Howard County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the Big Spring Police Department were dispatched to the bar in response to reports of a male individual brandishing a firearm.

As officers were en route to the location, they were informed that the suspect had fled the scene in a dark blue car. Upon arriving in the area, officers spotted a vehicle matching the description and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

However, the driver of the vehicle refused to comply with the officers’ instructions, leading to a pursuit. The pursuit came to an end when the vehicle crashed into a fence in the 1300 block of Barnes, near the intersection of Barnes and S. Monticello.

During the confrontation that followed, the officer ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, but the driver instead shot at the officer. In response, the officer returned fire before seeking cover behind a patrol vehicle. The driver, later identified as 42-year-old Orlando Montanez, fled on foot from the scene, prompting the issuance of a Blue Alert by law enforcement shortly before 9 a.m.

However, the alert was cancelled just an hour later, though it was not specified why or whether Montanez had been apprehended by the authorities.

The injured officer, whose identity has not been disclosed at this time, was transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock with serious injuries, as confirmed by the police.
