Accident – Death – Obituary News :

CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — Following a pro-Palestinian demonstration on the Old Main lawn at Arizona State University in Tempe last month, nearly all of the individuals who were arrested are set to appear in court for their arraignment.

In total, 71 out of the 72 individuals are scheduled to appear at the University Lakes Justice Court in Chandler at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday to receive information about the next steps in their case. The remaining defendant has already had their arraignment due to other charges, as confirmed by a Maricopa County Justice Courts spokesperson.

ASU Police have not yet formally requested charges from prosecutors, meaning that each defendant present at the court appearance will be provided with a form to fill out with their contact information in case a summons is issued.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will then have a one-year period to file charges against each defendant. This court appearance is essential for recording the “scratching” or vacating of the cases in the court records.

Court officials have issued a warning that individuals who fail to appear and subsequently have charges filed against them may have a warrant issued for their arrest.

The demonstrations on April 26 and April 27 were held to protest the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and urged the university to cease business dealings with companies supporting Israel. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators also demanded transparency from ASU officials regarding all investments made using student tuition fees.

In recent developments, ASU’s police chief, Michael Thompson, has been placed on paid administrative leave following complaints about his actions and handling of protests. This decision came shortly after four ASU students alleged that their hijabs were forcibly removed during the demonstrations.

Footage of a research scholar confronting a hijab-wearing woman at a pro-Israel rally has also surfaced, leading to the scholar, Jonathan Yudelman, being banned from the campus and prohibited from teaching at the school again.
