Opelika, Alabama – A 35-year-old man, Jose Pascual, has been arrested by Opelika Police on allegations of sexually abusing his girlfriend’s four-year-old child. Pascual, who was the boyfriend of the child’s biological mother at the time of the abuse, is currently facing charges of Sexual Abuse of a Child under the age of 12.
Investigation and Arrest
The investigation into the alleged abuse began over a year ago, on April 18, 2023, when a detective in Opelika met with the guardians of the four-year-old child. The child had been in their custody since August 2022, while her biological mother sought better living conditions. During her time in their care, the child disclosed details that pointed to the mother’s boyfriend as the perpetrator of the abuse.
Subsequently, on April 19, 2023, the child was taken to a child advocacy center for further questioning. However, she was initially unable to provide detailed answers. It was later established that Pascual was present during a scheduled visitation with the child and her biological mother.
On May 8, 2024, Pascual voluntarily went to the Opelika Police Department for a polygraph test and interview conducted by an FBI special agent who is a certified examiner fluent in Spanish. Pascual waived his Miranda rights before the examination and initially denied any contact with the child, claiming he had stayed with the mother after the child was placed in foster care.
However, during the course of the polygraph and interview process, Pascual eventually confessed to being in the house with the child. He later admitted to inappropriately touching the child, stating that it was only play. Following this admission, Pascual was arrested on May 10, 2024, and charged with Sexual Abuse of a Child under the age of 12. He is currently in custody at the Lee County Detention Facility.
