Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in Salem Harbor, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old Gloucester man. John Masiz, a resident of Gloucester, was identified as the victim by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

The circumstances surrounding Masiz’s death are currently under investigation, pending the results of an autopsy by the state medical examiner’s office.

Boating Accident in Salem Sound

The fatal boating accident took place late Saturday afternoon in Salem Sound, where Masiz’s boat reportedly crashed onto the rocks of Misery Island shortly after 5 p.m.

Gloucester Police received a 911 call at 6:23 p.m. from a concerned individual in Gloucester, who informed them that Masiz, who had launched his boat named Talisman in Danvers the previous Saturday, was overdue to moor in Gloucester. The call was then transferred to Manchester-by-the-Sea Police and the harbor master, while the Coast Guard Station Gloucester initiated a search for Masiz off Beverly and Salem.

Discovery of Masiz’s Body

Several hours later, at 10:15 p.m., Masiz’s body was found separated from the boat by Beverly Harbormaster Peter Dickman. The boat was still in motion when it hit the island, indicating that Masiz had somehow become detached from the vessel. Eyewitness statements from a local marina revealed that the boat had been travelling alone when it left shore.

Salem Harbormaster Bill McHugh stated that the boat was en route from Danversport to Gloucester’s Inner Harbor when Masiz became separated from it. A search and rescue operation involving crews from Beverly, Danvers, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Marblehead, and Salem, as well as Massachusetts State Police, Coast Guard, and environmental police, was conducted to locate Masiz.

Continuing Investigation

McHugh described Masiz as an experienced boater, leading authorities to believe that the incident was a tragic accident. The pleasure vessel, Talisman, eventually broke up at low tide and was salvaged on Winter Island.

McHugh emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, as they try to determine the reason for Masiz’s separation from the boat. The authorities are working diligently to uncover the details surrounding this unfortunate boating accident.
