An elementary school principal in Florida has been accused of trapping a student in a classroom for over 40 minutes, putting him in a chokehold, and hitting him, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident, which took place at Destiny Leadership Academy in Ocala, was reported by a teacher who heard screaming coming from a classroom. The teacher witnessed the principal, identified as Dontay Akeem Prophet, allegedly “slam” the child on the floor.
Video footage from the incident shows Prophet engaging in a physical altercation with the student. The footage shows Prophet grabbing the student, putting him in a chokehold, slapping him in the face, and hitting him with a computer charger, leaving a welt on his forehead.
Authorities have charged Prophet with aggravated child abuse and false imprisonment of a child under 13. The principal claimed that he was trying to get the child’s attention as the child had allegedly threatened to harm himself.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students at Destiny Leadership Academy. The school has not yet provided a comment on the matter.
Ocala, where the incident occurred, is located about 80 miles northwest of downtown Orlando.
