A 35-year-old man from Washington state was apprehended this week on charges of fatally shooting his 8-month-old son in the head while the infant was peacefully sleeping in his crib. The accused, Dion Lamar Montgomery, allegedly misled his wife by claiming that he had only discharged blanks.

Montgomery was arrested on Wednesday and faces a slew of serious charges including first-degree murder, homicide, and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the tragic death of his son, Alaisea Matai Montgomery, according to legal documents obtained by Law&Crime.

Prior to the horrific incident involving his son, Montgomery purportedly fired multiple shots at two individuals without provocation on the street just outside his residence. This led to additional charges of first-degree assault and firearm violations.

Details of the Crime Scene

According to a press release by the Seattle Police Department, officers responded to a shooting incident at a residence in the 3000 block of 21st Avenue West at around 6:30 p.m. on May 8. Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered an adult female who informed them that her child, later identified as Alaisea Montgomery, had been shot.

Tragically, firefighters from the Seattle Fire Department pronounced the child deceased at the scene. Law enforcement officials secured the area until the Homicide and Crime Scene Investigation Units took over the investigation.

Following an autopsy conducted by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, it was determined that the cause of young Alaisea’s death was a homicide due to a single gunshot wound to the head.

Disturbing Revelations

Details from court records, as reported by the Seattle Times, shed light on the unsettling sequence of events that unfolded on that fateful day. Allegedly, Montgomery began shooting at random individuals near the intersection of 22nd Avenue West and Thorndyke Avenue West. Fortunately, the victims managed to evade harm by seeking cover behind a nearby vehicle.

Responding officers apprehended an adult male matching the description of the shooter a few blocks away from the initial scene. This individual was later identified as Montgomery, who was unarmed at the time of his arrest.

As law enforcement officers were taking Montgomery into custody, a woman was seen running around a nearby apartment complex while holding a firearm. She informed the police that her husband, Montgomery, had fatally shot their infant son. The mother of the victim recounted that she was in the bathroom when Montgomery entered the bedroom where their son was peacefully sleeping. Moments later, a gunshot rang out. When questioned, Montgomery allegedly claimed it was just a blank round. The mother wrestled the gun away from Montgomery, who left the residence shortly before she discovered their son with a gunshot wound to the eye.

Legal Proceedings and Past Record

During his initial court appearance, prosecutors highlighted the gravity of the case, emphasizing the tragic circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Montgomery, who reportedly has a criminal history dating back to 2002, including convictions for assault, theft, possessing a stolen vehicle, and evading law enforcement, is currently held at King County Jail on a $5 million bond. His arraignment is scheduled for May 23.

It is a harrowing tale of senseless violence that has shocked the community and left many questioning the events that led to such a tragic outcome.
