A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Crawford County on Saturday as a 13-year-old boy lost his life in a tragic side-by-side crash. The incident occurred on Shartle Road near the intersection with Leslie Road in West Mead Township, Crawford County, around 10:18 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.

Details of the Crash

According to a press release from PSP Meadville, authorities responded to a call regarding a UTV crash on Shartle Road. Upon arrival, they found a juvenile male on the roadway with serious injuries. Despite efforts to save his life, the boy succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Meadville Medical Center.

Initially, State Police reported the victim as a 14-year-old male from Meadville. However, a recent article by the Meadville Tribune clarified that the victim was, in fact, 13 years old.

The investigation revealed that the crash involved four juvenile males who were travelling west on Shartle Road in a 2017 Polaris UTV. The operator was attempting to navigate a left-hand curve when the UTV lost control, rolled onto its side, and ejected the young victim who was a passenger in the vehicle.

Subsequently, the UTV spun 180 degrees, veered off the north side of the roadway, and finally came to a stop in a ditch on the north side, facing east. Fortunately, the other passengers, two 14-year-old males from Meadville, escaped with minor injuries. One of the passengers declined medical treatment.

Assistance at the Scene

State Police received support from the West Mead Township Volunteer Fire Department and Meadville Area Ambulance at the scene of the crash. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.
