Accident – Death – Obituary News : The recent tragic police shooting of Win Rozario, a 19-year-old Bangladeshi teenager residing in Queens, New York, has sparked outrage and calls for justice from his family and the community. Rozario reached out to 911 in late March seeking help during a mental health crisis, but instead of receiving assistance, he was fatally shot by two New York police officers who arrived at his family’s home. The officers, identified as Matthew Cianfrocco and Salvatore Alongi, fired at Rozario at least four times within minutes of entering the residence. The NYPD claimed that Rozario had advanced towards them with a pair of scissors, but newly released police body-camera footage tells a different story. The footage shows Rozario standing on the other side of the kitchen, several feet away from the officers, as his mother, Noton Eva Costa, desperately tried to shield him.

City Councilmember Shahana Hanif, representing New York City’s 39th Council District, expressed her dismay over the incident, stating, “He needed help, and what they did instead was kill him.” Hanif also highlighted the ongoing efforts of progressives to pass a ceasefire resolution at City Council to demand an end to the conflict in Gaza, as well as Mayor Eric Adams’s crackdown on asylum seekers.

During a news conference outside New York City Hall, Costa, an immigrant from Bangladesh, tearfully pleaded for justice, stating, “These police were grown men with guns. They didn’t have to kill my child. I tried to protect my son. I begged the police not to shoot, but the police still killed him.” Utcho Rozario, Win’s younger brother, also spoke out, emphasizing Win’s positive qualities and the impact of his loss on their family.

The Rozario family and community organizers are demanding that the officers involved be fired and criminally charged. Hanif criticized the response of the police, noting the aggressive and reckless behavior displayed during the incident. She emphasized the need for a more compassionate and effective approach to handling mental health crises, citing the inadequacy of the current system.

In light of the recent events, Hanif also addressed the issue of immigration, particularly Mayor Adams’s policies regarding asylum seekers. She highlighted the negative impact of the mayor’s policy limiting shelter stays for newly arrived asylum seekers and advocated for the repeal of this harmful directive.

As the community mourns the loss of Win Rozario and demands accountability for his tragic death, the call for justice and reform in policing and mental health response systems grows louder. The heartbreaking story of Win Rozario serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for change and compassion in law enforcement practices..
