Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Sadness has enveloped the Kanjuku village in Gatundu North, Kiambu county, following a tragic motorbike accident that claimed the lives of two secondary school students on Thursday evening.

The incident occurred on the Mang’u-Flyover road in Kiambu, involving two motorbikes and a vehicle. The two students, identified as Francis Muiruri, 17, and his cousin Jane Mugure, also 17, were pillion passengers on a motorbike when the accident happened.

Francis, a Form Four student at Kanjuku Secondary School, and Jane, a Form Three student in the same school, tragically lost their lives just hours before schools were set to reopen on Monday, May 13, 2024.

According to reports from the family, the two students were returning home after visiting the Kariminu (ii) dam when the motorbike they were travelling on was hit from behind by another motorbike. The impact sent them rolling on the tarmac before colliding with a vehicle.

The tragedy has left the family devastated, as they mourn the loss of two young lives with promising futures ahead of them. The family described the moments following the accident, with Brian Mburu, another Form Four student and rider of the motorbike, sustaining injuries in the collision.

Brian recalled the chaotic scene, stating, “I must have fainted following the accident – and when I came to – I saw my two cousins lying on the tarmac, bleeding and unconscious. Jane looked very bad, while Muiruri was calling out to God.”

The family rushed the injured youngsters to Mubau Health Centre in Kiambu, but unfortunately, there was no medical personnel available to attend to them. They then proceeded to Igegania Level Four Hospital, where the security guard refused to open the gate, prompting a final rush to Thika Level Five Hospital, which proved to be too late.

The family is now calling on the Kiambu county leadership to improve and streamline services at healthcare facilities to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Residents in the area are also advocating for the installation of speed bumps and proper road signage to enhance road safety and prevent accidents.

The bodies of the two students are currently at the General Kago Morgue, while the authorities have taken custody of the motorbike and the vehicle involved in the accident.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for improved emergency response services to prevent the loss of young lives in similar circumstances.
