A devastating hit-and-run incident took place in Long Beach in the early hours of Sunday morning, resulting in the tragic death of a 17-year-old boy who was riding a scooter. The Long Beach Police Department received a distressing call at approximately 12:40 a.m., reporting a collision at the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Street.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered that the victim, a young 17-year-old boy whose identity has not yet been disclosed, had been struck by a 2012 Cadillac travelling northbound on Orange Avenue while he was heading north on South Street. Shockingly, instead of stopping to assist the injured boy, the driver of the SUV callously continued driving north until crashing into an apartment building located at 6100 Orange Avenue.

The injured boy was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition; however, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The identity of the victim is still being withheld pending notification of his family.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Following the collision, the driver of the Cadillac, later identified as 35-year-old Karen Mativa from Compton, fled the scene on foot. However, she returned a short while later and was apprehended by law enforcement officers. Mativa has since been booked on several charges, including driving under the influence, hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and assault with a deadly weapon with force. She is currently being held on a bail amount of $130,000.

Factors Contributing to the Tragic Incident

Investigations into the incident have revealed that both speeding and impaired driving are likely to have played a significant role in the fatal crash. The Long Beach Police Department is urging anyone with additional information regarding the incident to come forward and assist with their inquiries. Those with relevant details are encouraged to contact LBPD’s Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7355.

This heart-wrenching tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless and irresponsible driving behaviour. The Long Beach community is left mourning the loss of a young life, while authorities work tirelessly to ensure that justice is served in this case.
