Tragedy struck in Long Beach, California, as a 17-year-old teenager lost his life in a hit-and-run accident on Mother’s Day, officials have confirmed.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday when a 2012 Cadillac SUV driver struck the teenager, who was riding a scooter, on Orange Avenue and callously fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries sustained in the collision.

After striking an apartment building, the suspect abandoned her vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. She was apprehended shortly after.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Karen Mativa from Compton, faces charges including driving under the influence, hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and assault with a deadly weapon with force. Her bail has been set at $130,000.

A makeshift memorial has been set up at the crash site to honour the young victim, whose identity has not been released by authorities.

Law enforcement officials are investigating speed and impaired driving as possible contributing factors to the tragic incident.
