A tragic incident unfolded in Ridgeland, Mississippi on Mother’s Day as a man took the lives of his mother and two sisters, according to authorities.
Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers stated that officers responded to a call about the triple homicide at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The victims have been identified as 76-year-old Ida Thomas Welch, 56-year-old Vicky Renee Welch, and 42-year-old Crystal Lynn Welch, as reported by WLBT.
Ivory James Welch III, the son of the victims, is the primary suspect in the case. An arrest warrant was issued for him, and the U.S. Marshals Task Force initiated a search for his whereabouts.
Despite efforts to flee, Welch managed to travel to Arizona. However, his escape was short-lived as he was located by troopers and engaged in a fatal shootout.
Crystal Welch, one of the victims, was an active member of the Mississippi ACLU Board of Directors, serving since 2023.
Jarvis Dortch, the Executive Director of ACLU MS, fondly remembers Crystal as an “enthusiastic leader” and a “great friend.”
In a statement, Dortch expressed, “She consistently sought ways to further support our team and mission. Her dedication to equality and justice will always be valued by our staff and board. We will miss her lively spirit and unwavering passion.”
