Central Florida deputies were recently involved in a lethal shooting incident in Plant City, Florida. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the deputy-involved shooting, which took place involving two Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
On Tuesday, May 7th, at approximately 2:40am, deputies were called to the 2900 block of Frontage Drive in Plant City in response to reports of a suspect on the property threatening the residents inside.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered an erratic suspect exhibiting concerning behavior. Body-worn camera footage captured the individual pacing alongside a wrought-iron fence, emitting guttural sounds and displaying aggressive body language towards the deputies.
The suspect was observed holding a sharp object, prompting deputies to attempt to de-escalate the situation by instructing him to drop the item. Despite their commands, the suspect refused to comply.
As the suspect grew increasingly hostile, he kicked open a nearby fence and made a sudden lunge towards the deputies. In response, the deputies maintained a safe distance while continuing their efforts to de-escalate the situation.
Despite utilizing non-lethal tools such as the BolaWrap and a taser in an attempt to subdue the suspect, their efforts proved ineffective as the individual persisted in his aggressive behaviour.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister commended the deputies for their professionalism and dedication to exhausting all available non-lethal options before resorting to the use of deadly force. He stated, “Our deputies demonstrated exceptional judgement and training in their attempts to preserve life in this challenging situation.”
Ultimately, the deputies were forced to discharge their service weapons in self-defence as the suspect charged towards them. Following the gunfire, immediate lifesaving measures were initiated, but tragically, the suspect succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased suspect has been identified as 40-year-old Anthony Ray Gamez.
The deputies involved in the incident have been named as 43-year-old Deputy Robert Sanchez, a veteran with 17 years of service, and 27-year-old Deputy Jacob St. John, who has served for ten months.
Both deputies have no prior records of using deadly force in the line of duty. While the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts its investigation, the deputies have been placed on administrative leave as per standard procedure. The case remains active and ongoing as law enforcement authorities gather further evidence.
