Texas inmate Wyatt Ellis Busby, aged 39, has been identified as the individual responsible for the death of Billy Chermirmir, aged 50. The tragic incident occurred on September 19, 2023, at the H.H Coffield Unit, where Busby was serving a 50-year sentence for a previous fatal stabbing.
Who is Wyatt Ellis Busby?
Details from the Office of the Inspector General confirm that Chemirmir was “stabbed/beaten to death.” The investigation indicates that he succumbed to blunt force trauma caused by a “knife/edged instrument.”
The altercation took place in their shared cell, with Busby allegedly dragging Chemirmir out and attacking him. While the exact motive remains unclear, District Attorney for Dallas County, John Cuezot, suggests that Chemirmir made inappropriate comments about Busby’s children, sparking a verbal and physical confrontation that tragically led to Chemirmir’s demise. Despite other inmates witnessing the assault, authorities were slow to respond, giving Busby the opportunity to carry out the murder.
Busby was charged with murder amidst an uptick in inmate fatalities, prompting a statewide lockdown of Texas prisons. While most facilities resumed normal operations, the Coffield Unit remained under lockdown.
Chemirmir had previously been indicted for the murders of Mary Brooks, aged 87, and Lu Thi Harris, aged 80, and was sentenced to two life terms without parole. He was known for targeting elderly women in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, using pillow smothering as his modus operandi to steal their jewellery. His spree of terror spanned from 2016 to 2018, claiming the lives of approximately 22 elderly women.
Survivor Mary Annis Bartel, aged 91, provided crucial information to the police that led to Chemirmir’s arrest, bringing an end to his reign of terror. Bartel’s detailed testimony, along with the discovery of missing jewellery in Chemirmir’s possession, prompted authorities to reopen investigations into other similar deaths, culminating in his apprehension.
A new Paramount+ series titled “Pillowcase Murders” aims to shed light on the events in Dallas-Fort Worth during Chemirmir’s crime spree. Directed by Randy Ferrell, the three-part series delves into the origins of the murders and Chemirmir’s eventual capture, raising questions about how the authorities overlooked his activities for two years. The series is set to premiere on Thursday, May 14.
