Sutroye Ghosh : Tragic: 16-Year-Old Girl Dies of Heart Attack in Kolkata

Kolkata, 12th May: Tragedy struck in Kolkata as a Class XI student, Sutroye Ghosh, tragically passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest during school hours on Friday morning, 10th May. The 16-year-old student, a resident of Malanga Lane in the Wellington region, had a pre-existing heart condition known as congenital cardiac condition. She had undergone open-heart surgery at the tender age of two and had a stent re-implanted just a year ago.

Details of the Incident

Sutroye had a seemingly normal morning, having breakfast with her father before heading to school. It was supposed to be the last day of classes before the summer vacation. However, tragedy struck when she suddenly collapsed at school after engaging with her classmates and marking her attendance. Her sister received the distressing call from the school at 7:55 am.

The school authorities at Loreto Day School in Bowbazar promptly contacted the Calcutta Medical College & Hospital, which provided an oxygen cylinder and an ambulance on request. Unfortunately, due to delays in the ambulance’s arrival, Sutroye’s family decided to transport her to BM Birla Hospital themselves. They reached the hospital around 10 am, two hours after she lost consciousness, and the medical team declared her deceased upon arrival.

According to the girl’s aunt, the oxygen cylinder provided by the hospital was found empty, raising concerns about the adequacy of medical assistance during the critical moments. The initial postmortem report, as confirmed by an official at the Bowbazar police station, indicated that Sutroye succumbed to a heart attack.

Sutroye Ghosh’s funeral took place on the same day at 7:30 pm, with teachers and students at Loreto Day School mourning the untimely loss of a promising student. Sutroye had been diligently preparing for the NEET exam with aspirations of pursuing a career in medicine.
