TAMPA, Fla. — A deadly shooting incident in Tampa’s SoHo district left two men dead and another man injured in the early hours of Sunday morning, authorities have confirmed.
According to a news release from the Tampa Police Department, the shooting took place around 3 a.m. EDT at 533 S. Howard Ave., a popular area known for its bars and restaurants. The altercation between the three men escalated, resulting in gunfire, the police said.
Police Chief Lee Bercaw revealed that the argument unfolded in front of a Jimmy John’s restaurant in The Shops on South Howard. The exact cause of the dispute remains unknown.
“It appeared to be a disturbance, and within seconds, shots were fired,” Bercaw told reporters during a press conference. “The groups involved were familiar with each other and had a longstanding conflict.”
Officers responding to the scene heard gunshots and discovered three adult males with gunshot wounds, as reported by WTVT. Two of the men, identified as Kenneth Washington, 28, and Kevon Christmas, 23, succumbed to their injuries. The third man is currently hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.
No other injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident, Bercaw confirmed.
Hillsborough County State Attorney Susan Lopez expressed her condolences to the families affected by the violence, emphasizing the high police presence in the area at the time of the incident.
Bercaw reiterated the department’s commitment to investigating the case thoroughly, urging anyone with information or video footage of the altercation to come forward.
“Our officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians are working diligently to gather evidence and leads in this case,” Bercaw stated in the news release.
