A grandfather in California found himself in hot water after allegedly paying a homeless woman $20 to watch his granddaughter while he indulged in drinks at a local bar.

According to Sacramento County Sheriff’s North Patrol Deputies, the incident took place around 7:45 PM on Monday, May 6, 2024, in the parking lot of a bar on the 5300 block of Auburn Boulevard. Authorities were alerted by a concerned passerby who reported that a man, later identified as 54-year-old Jason Warren, was soliciting help claiming his 7-year-old granddaughter had been abducted for human trafficking.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Warren, who appeared to be heavily intoxicated. Warren confessed to giving an unidentified homeless woman $20 to take his granddaughter to a nearby thrift store while he spent time inside the bar, approximately four hours prior. Video surveillance footage corroborated the woman leaving with the child.

Law enforcement swiftly mobilized additional resources, including STAR (Sheriff’s helicopter), Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS/drones), and Sheriff’s K9 units, to aid in the search. Approximately 30 minutes into the operation, the woman heard the announcements from STAR and returned to the parking lot with the child.

The woman revealed to deputies that Warren was inebriated, leading her to doubt his ability to care for the child. She took the young girl to her makeshift dwelling to provide food. The child, when questioned by authorities, confirmed the events. Fortunately, she showed no signs of distress and was assessed by Fire Department personnel as a precaution.

Further investigation uncovered that the child’s aunt, who had full custody, had entrusted Warren with the care of her niece while she was at work. Child Protective Services were consulted, and it was determined that the child could return home with her aunt.

Following consultations with Detectives from the Sheriff’s Child Abuse Bureau, Warren was arrested on charges of felony child endangerment and other offenses. He was taken into custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains held on a $75,000 bail. Warren is scheduled for a court appearance on May 8, 2024.
