(PUEBLO, Colo.) — In a disturbing incident on May 8, 2024, at approximately 7:03 p.m., the Pueblo Police Department (PPD) responded to a report of a man causing a disturbance in Bessemer Park in Pueblo. The man was reported to be yelling and screaming, harassing park-goers, including adults and young children.

Man Threatens Park Ranger with Knife

Upon arrival at the scene, a peace officer from the Pueblo Police Department discovered that the man had also approached a park ranger with a knife, demanding money. The situation escalated quickly, putting the safety of those in the park at risk.

Confrontation with Police

When confronted by the officer, the man brandished two knives, one in each hand, and stared her down from a distance of approximately 20 feet. The officer, mindful of the presence of other park-goers, made the decision to avoid direct confrontation to prevent any harm to bystanders.

Arrest and Charges

The man, later identified as 42-year-old James Gilbert, was eventually apprehended by additional officers and taken into custody. Gilbert now faces serious charges, including Attempted Aggravated Robbery and Felony Menacing. He has been booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center, where he will await further legal proceedings.
