EUCLID, Ohio (WJW) — The Euclid police officer tragically killed in the line of duty on Saturday night has been identified as 23-year-old Jacob Derbin, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.
Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer expressed that Officer Derbin was an exceptional individual and the entire department is deeply saddened by his loss.
The officer, who was a military veteran, had served on the force for less than two years.
According to Euclid police reports, officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence in the 300 block of East 211th Street around 9:56 p.m. on Saturday. During the investigation, Officer Derbin was ambushed by a gunman and tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Derbin was rushed to a nearby hospital but, unfortunately, did not survive.
A manhunt is currently underway for the suspect, identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, who is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are currently collaborating with the Euclid Police Department to locate the suspect.
Individuals with any information on the whereabouts of Deshawn Anthony Vaughn are urged to contact the Euclid Police Detective Bureau at 216-289-8505 or the U.S Marshal’s Service at 1-866-492-6833.
“The Euclid Police Department kindly requests that the fallen Officer, his family, loved ones, and our agency remain in your thoughts and prayers,” as stated by the police department.
Chief Scott Meyer fondly remembered Officer Derbin, saying, “He was an incredible human being with a great heart and an infectious smile. The world is a better place with him in it.”
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost released a statement regarding Derbin’s unfortunate demise:
“The commitment to protect is sealed with the blood of our officers. The perpetrator who ambushed Officer Derbin will be apprehended and face the full extent of the law.
It is a cruel twist of fate that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day, and this tragedy occurred as we prepare to honour our fallen heroes during Police Memorial Week. My heart is heavy with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.” Derbin had only been with the department for a year.
The Euclid Police Department has sought assistance from the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation to probe the officer-involved critical incident. BCI’s investigation is currently active and ongoing.
