Accident – Death – Obituary News :

There has been a cloud of controversy hanging over the recent death of a 63-year-old land agent who was detained at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Ilorin, Kwara State. The deceased, identified as Alhaji Hussein Abubakar, passed away on Friday, May 10, after spending over four months in detention at the correctional centre.

Alhaji Abubakar, a land agent who represented landowners in various property transactions, was reportedly detained at the facility following a legal dispute stemming from a failed land deal. Despite efforts to secure his release on bail, he remained in detention without being brought to court for several months.

A relative of the deceased, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed disappointment in the handling of Abubakar’s case by the judiciary and the correctional facility authorities. The relative highlighted the lack of consideration for Abubakar’s health condition and the failure to provide him with a fair chance to address his legal obligations.

Regarding Abubakar’s demise, the relative stated, “On Friday, we learned he was rushed to a hospital. Some sources claim he passed away on the way to the hospital, while others suggest he died during treatment. His deteriorating health condition was known to the judge overseeing his case.”

Statement from Nigerian Correctional Service

Phillip Adegbulugbe, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kwara State, confirmed the death of Alhaji Abubakar but refuted claims that he died within the correctional facility. Adegbulugbe clarified that Abubakar was transferred to the General Hospital in Ilorin, where he eventually passed away. He emphasised that Abubakar did not breathe his last within the confines of the correctional centre.

“He was taken to General Hospital, Ilorin, where he died. I saw his hospital file detailing his illness. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday evening and sadly passed away around 8 am on Friday. Contrary to speculation, he did not die in the facility as some have alleged,” Adegbulugbe stated.

The circumstances surrounding Alhaji Abubakar’s detention and subsequent death have raised questions about the treatment of individuals in custody and the need for a more compassionate approach to legal proceedings involving vulnerable individuals.
