ESCANABA — The kayaker who tragically drowned in Little Bay de Noc has been identified as 29-year-old Tyler Wright from Grand Rapids, Michigan, according to the Delta County Sheriff’s Office.

Wright was enjoying a kayaking and fishing outing off the shores of Stonington in Little Bay de Noc on Sunday when he failed to return to shore. Concerned friends and family reported him missing at 7 p.m. that evening.

An extensive search operation, involving multiple agencies and resources, was launched to locate Wright. Despite efforts from shore, water, and air, the search initially yielded no results. However, the discovery of Wright’s overturned kayak around 2 a.m. on Monday prompted further intensified search efforts.

The search continued throughout Monday without any significant developments. The following day, on Tuesday, the search resumed and tragically culminated in the discovery of Wright’s body at approximately 1 p.m. He was found in 14 feet of water, approximately half a mile offshore.

Notably, Wright was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, and the water temperatures in the area were recorded to be around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office received invaluable assistance from various agencies, including the Michigan State Police Marine Services Unit, Delta County Search and Rescue, Delta County Dive Team, and Delta County Victim’s Service Unit. Additional support came from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, Gladstone Public Safety, U.S. Coast Guard, Masonville Fire Department, Air Force Rescue Coordination Command Center, Rampart EMS, American Red Cross, and Bay de Noc Township.
