A devastating road accident took place on Saturday morning at the iconic Bellasis Bridge, also known as the Mumbai Central Bridge, resulting in the untimely death of a 57-year-old tempo driver.
Height Barrier Installation Leads to Fatal Collision
The Nagpada police officials reported that the fatal accident occurred after railway authorities had recently installed a height barricade measuring 3.50 meters at the entrance of the bridge. This precautionary measure was taken to prevent heavy vehicles from entering the bridge due to ongoing construction work.
The Bellasis Bridge, a historic structure connecting Tardeo to Nagpada, had come under scrutiny following the collapse of Andheri’s Gokhale bridge. Initially, plans were in place for the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation to reconstruct the bridge into a six-lane structure. However, this proposal was later abandoned in favour of constructing a temporary foot over bridge (FOB) by the Western Railway.
Tragic Collision at Mumbai Central Junction
Early on Saturday morning, tragedy struck as a motor dumper vehicle, travelling at high speed from Mumbai Central Junction towards Tardeo, collided with the newly installed iron height barrier. The impact of the collision caused the barrier to fall onto the front part of the vehicle, where the driver, identified as Ramu Kavaldhari Yadav, was seated.
Despite immediate medical attention, Yadav succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family. The Nagpada Police, along with railway authorities, conducted a thorough investigation at the accident site. A case of accidental death was registered, and the body of the deceased was handed over to his family after the completion of postmortem procedures.
