A 19-year-old man has been handed a 4½-year prison sentence for his involvement in a robbery and a drive-by shooting that took place within a nine-day span last summer in Millwood and Spokane, respectively.

Details of the Incidents

Spokane police responded to two separate drive-by shootings on the morning of June 24 near North Dakota Street and Carlisle Avenue in the Logan Neighborhood. In the second shooting, multiple rounds hit a residence where individuals were present, resulting in one resident sustaining a cheek injury from wall debris caused by a bullet.

An eyewitness reported seeing a red Hyundai Sonata, subsequently identified as stolen, with two or three male occupants driving east on Carlisle towards Dakota. The witness observed the front passenger firing approximately 10 rounds from a handgun towards the northeast corner of the intersection before the vehicle fled the scene.

Following the incidents, officers were called to a car crash near East Francis Avenue and North Crestline Street. Three suspects – Joshua Gould, Ozzy Tarter, and Dezmen Belgarde – were apprehended at the scene, and two firearms were recovered by the police.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

During court hearings, it was revealed that Gould was seated in the front passenger position of the crashed vehicle, with a black handgun found in his sweatshirt. Belgarde was believed to be the driver of the stolen vehicle involved in the shootings.

Gould pleaded guilty on May 3 to charges of drive-by shooting and first-degree robbery. Spokane County Superior Court Judge Timothy Fennessy subsequently sentenced him to 34 months in prison for the drive-by shooting and 54 months for the Millwood Grocery & Spirits robbery that occurred on June 15. The sentences will run concurrently, totalling 54 months, and Gould will serve an additional 18 months in community custody upon release.

Belgarde, aged 17, received an 8½-year prison sentence earlier this year after pleading guilty to charges related to the drive-by shooting. Tarter, aged 20, was sentenced to 15 months in prison in October for his involvement in both the drive-by shooting and the Millwood robbery.

Conclusion

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in violent criminal activities. The swift actions of law enforcement have resulted in the apprehension and sentencing of those responsible for these dangerous acts, ensuring justice is served for the victims and the community at large.
