The confusion began when Columbia police mistakenly arrested a man named Jarod Stacy on March 25, accusing him of setting fire to several Walmart locations in the area. However, Stacy provided authorities with Laycock’s name, leading to Laycock being erroneously booked under that name at the county detention center.

He speculates that Stacy may have come into possession of his lost identification, but Columbia police have refuted this claim, stating that Stacy did not have any identification on him at the time of his arrest.
In addition to the confusion surrounding the case, Laycock has also received an unexpected medical bill, further adding to his concerns about the ongoing repercussions of the mistaken identity.
In an effort to seek clarity on the matter, Laycock requested booking documents and phone calls related to Stacy’s time in jail, only to be told that obtaining these records would come at a steep cost of upwards of $500. This has raised suspicions of the county’s transparency in handling the situation.
