Belton, South Carolina – A 3-year-old South Carolina boy is currently hospitalized with third degree burns after his father allegedly kidnapped him and led deputies on a chase that culminated in a fiery crash.

The young boy, identified as Bennett, is currently receiving critical care at a Georgia burn center for third degree burns that cover 90% of his body. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family to support Bennett’s medical expenses and recovery.

Violent Kidnapping Incident

The incident unfolded in Belton, South Carolina, when deputies from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home after Bennett’s father, Joshua Dornellas, violently assaulted the boy’s mother. Dornellas then forcefully took the 3-year-old and fled the scene.

Investigators followed the suspect in an unmarked car to ensure the safety of the child and nearby drivers. Dornellas reportedly threatened Bennett’s life during the pursuit, leading to a high-stakes chase across state lines.

Fiery Crash and Arrest

As Dornellas crossed into Georgia on I-85, Georgia State Patrol troopers initiated a pursuit. During the chase, Dornellas deliberately set fire to the vehicle, causing it to fill with smoke. He then jumped out of the moving truck, leaving Bennett behind.

The truck crashed into an embankment and burst into flames with the young boy still inside. Authorities believe Dornellas intended to harm the 3-year-old in the horrific incident.

Rescue Efforts and Charges

Emergency responders from Georgia and South Carolina rushed to extinguish the fire and extract Bennett from the burning vehicle. The child suffered severe burns and was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center for specialized treatment.

Dornellas was apprehended by Georgia State Patrol and taken to a local medical facility for treatment of his injuries. He now faces a multitude of charges in both South Carolina and Georgia for his alleged actions.

Community Support and Recovery

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has expressed solidarity with the child’s mother during this challenging time. They are asking for continued prayers for Bennett’s recovery as he battles for his life in the trauma center.

The family’s GoFundMe campaign aims to provide financial support for Bennett’s medical needs, rehabilitation, and overall well-being. Bennett’s mother, Chelsea, is a single parent of three, and any donations will go towards assisting the family during this difficult period.
