Raleigh, North Carolina – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its findings on a recent crash landing involving a UNC medical plane at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The incident, which occurred last month, resulted in both individuals onboard being sent to the hospital for treatment.
According to the NTSB report, air traffic control at RDU cleared the plane to land on April 24. However, upon landing, the plane bounced on the runway before initiating a missed approach and starting a left turn. The aircraft then appeared to stall and ultimately crashed to the ground.
The passenger on board described the plane’s final approach as “rolling” and “tobogganing,” simulating a descent down a snowy hill. The pilot executed two touch-downs before attempting to take off again by turning and rolling the airplane to the left. Throughout this sequence of events, no communication occurred between the pilot and passenger.
Surveillance footage and photos revealed that the TBM 850, N228CH plane struck the ground with its left wingtip and nose nearly simultaneously. Following the impact, the aircraft rotated an additional 45 degrees before coming to a rest in an upright position. The propeller was detached from the engine, showing signs of gouging and scratching near the blade tips.
The NTSB report detailed extensive damage to the left wing, with the outboard section of the mid-span being destroyed and scattered near the main wreckage. In contrast, the right wing remained largely intact, albeit with an upward bend at its tip indicative of impact.
The pilot, identified as Art Johnson, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash, while the passenger, Dr. Paul Chelminski, only suffered minor injuries. The NTSB’s investigation into the incident continues as they work to determine the exact cause of the crash.
