Accident – Death – Obituary News : Roanoke Valley law enforcement authorities have reported a recent incident involving an armed robbery and a car crash with an infant in the vehicle.

In the case of the armed robbery, a 23-year-old man from Roanoke Rapids, identified as Armel Triquan Deloatch, has been apprehended and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault by pointing a gun. The incident took place at a convenience store on West Tenth Street just outside Roanoke Rapids around 8 p.m. Captain Scott Hall of the sheriff’s office stated that Deloatch entered the store dressed in dark clothing and wearing a dark-colored face mask, demanding money from the cashier and a patron. After taking the money, he fled towards the Roanoke Rapids area. Thanks to the efforts of Canine handler Corporal R. Elder and his dog Ivey, Deloatch was tracked down and arrested by Detective C. Watkins with the assistance of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department Officers.

In another incident, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant reported a car crash involving a 32-year-old driver, James Wayne Johnston, who collided head-on with a tree on Old Farm Road near Downsbrook Drive. Johnston’s infant child, who was unsecured in the vehicle, was fortunately unharmed. The driver and the infant were both taken to ECU North for injuries sustained in the crash. Officer B. Holcomb, who responded to the scene, determined that Johnston had been driving erratically at a high speed prior to the collision. Holcomb suspected Johnston of being impaired and obtained a search warrant for a blood draw to confirm this suspicion. Johnston was cited for several violations including expired registration plate, driving while license revoked, child restraint violation, and careless and reckless driving.

Both Deloatch and Johnston are set to appear in district court for their respective charges. Deloatch’s court date is scheduled for May 14, while Johnston is expected to appear on June 14, pending the results of the blood draw. The authorities are continuing their investigations into both incidents to ensure justice is served..
