Police officers from the Clearwater Police Department were called to the scene of a collision early this morning on the Courtney Campbell Causeway involving a driver under the influence and a highway maintenance vehicle.
The incident took place at 2:43 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the causeway. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Andra Newkirk from Tampa, collided with the back of a road maintenance vehicle that had its emergency lights on and was stationary at the time.
As a result of the crash, one worker who was employed as a subcontractor for the Department of Transportation sustained minor injuries and was transported to Mease Countryside Hospital for treatment.
Due to the investigation that followed, the westbound lanes of the causeway had to be closed for a period of time.
Newkirk has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) with property damage. Once she has been given medical clearance from a local hospital, she will be taken to Pinellas County Jail for booking.
