Trina found herself in a harrowing situation in 2020 when she woke up in the early hours of the morning to discover her friend’s boyfriend naked and on top of her. Startled and frightened, she managed to fight him off and escape to safety, but the trauma of that incident has stayed with her to this day.

After seeking medical attention and reporting the assault to the authorities, Trina’s case was unfortunately marked with an “SL” code by the Houston Police Department (HPD). This code, used to suspend cases due to a lack of personnel, left Trina feeling abandoned and neglected by the very system meant to protect her.

Years later, Trina’s case resurfaced when it was discovered that DNA evidence collected at the time of the assault matched that of a known felon who had been arrested by the FBI in 2016. Despite this breakthrough, Trina and many others found themselves caught in a bureaucratic nightmare, with their cases shelved and forgotten.

As the news of the suspended cases became public knowledge, HPD launched an internal investigation into how such oversights could have occurred. The handling of these cases, or lack thereof, led to the retirement of former HPD Chief Troy Finner, who was succeeded by Larry Satterwhite.

Mayor John Whitmire acknowledged the need for HPD to refocus its efforts on crime fighting and ensuring that victims like Trina receive the justice they deserve. The new acting police chief, Satterwhite, has vowed to prioritize these cases and work towards resolving them to the best of his ability.

Trina, who had lost faith in the system after years of neglect, cautiously awaits the actions of the new police chief. She hopes that he will stay true to his promises and not turn his back on survivors like her.

For victims whose contact information may have changed since they first reported their cases, HPD has provided a helpline for them to reach out and update their details. It is crucial that these survivors are given the support and closure they deserve.

As the city of Houston grapples with the fallout of these suspended cases, it is imperative that steps are taken to ensure that such oversights never happen again. Victims like Trina deserve justice, closure, and the knowledge that their voices have been heard.
