The tragic stabbing of 17-year-old Sara Rivera is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving New York City’s teenagers in recent weeks.

As the summer approaches, concerns are mounting among advocates in the city about the potential increase in violence endangering the youth of the city even further.

“With the summer months approaching, there is typically an uptick in violence as more individuals, not just young people, but all members of the community, spend more time outdoors, often leading to negative interactions,” stated Keith Taylor, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan.

Rivera’s tragic death is just one of several recent fatal incidents involving teenagers in the city. Here’s an overview of some recent events:

16-year-old fatally shot in SoHo

Police reported that Mahki Brown, a 16-year-old, was tragically shot and killed near Varick and Spring streets in Soho on Tuesday.

Brown, an avid basketball player who commuted from East Flatbush to attend Broome Street Academy Charter High School, was well-known in the community. Lakesha Jenkins, a neighbor who had known him since he was a child, expressed her shock and sorrow over the tragedy.

Following the shooting, Brown was rushed to Bellevue Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Authorities are currently searching for two male suspects who fled the scene.

Two teens stabbed in Crotona Park

In a separate incident in the Bronx, a 14-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest, while a 15-year-old boy was slashed in the hand outside a McDonald’s in Crotona Park.

Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries, although no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

17-year-old attacked in the Bronx

According to the NYPD, a 17-year-old boy was assaulted by a group of seven individuals in the Bronx on May 6. The victim sustained punches, kicks, and slashes to his face during the attack.

The victim was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition following the incident.

Two teenagers attacked in Brooklyn

Two teenage boys were stabbed in Brooklyn on May 7, as reported by the police.

Authorities disclosed that one victim sustained two stab wounds in the right leg, while the other suffered multiple stab wounds and slashes to different parts of his body.

Both teenagers were admitted to local hospitals and are currently in stable condition.

Teen fatally stabbed in the Bronx

In a tragic incident last week, police reported that a 15-year-old girl fatally stabbed a 17-year-old girl, identified as Emery Mizell, in the Soundview section of the Bronx.

According to the police report, Mizell sustained a fatal stab wound to her chest and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The 15-year-old perpetrator has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the incident.

14-year-old injured in Brooklyn shooting

A 14-year-old boy was struck by a bullet in the left foot while inside a playground in Brooklyn in April.

The injured boy was promptly taken to Maimonides Hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.

Authorities have not yet determined whether the boy was the intended target of the shooting.

16-year-old boy critical after Queens shooting

A 16-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after sustaining two gunshot wounds in Queens in April.

The victim reportedly suffered gunshot wounds to his groin and left wrist, requiring immediate medical attention.

Is crime escalating in New York City?

The NYPD recently released crime statistics for April, indicating a 4.9% decrease in overall crime compared to the same period last year.

Year-to-date crime trends for 2024 show a decline: From January 1, 2024, to April 28, 2024, the NYPD recorded 37.8K major crimes (including murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto). This figure is lower than the approximately 39K major crimes reported during the same period in 2023.

Murders saw a significant decrease of 30.3%, with 23 reported in April this year compared to 33 in April 2023. Burglaries also experienced a double-digit percentage decrease, with 1,003 incidents this month compared to 1,122 in April 2023. Additionally, shooting incidents decreased by 15.5%.
