A McCormick County deputy was recently honoured on the Statehouse floor in recognition of his bravery during an officer-involved shooting incident. Sgt. Robby Coker received special acknowledgement from Senators Billy Garrett, Brian Adams, and Shane Massey for his heroic actions.

The incident in question took place last June when Sgt. Coker responded to 911 calls reporting a suspicious person in the vicinity of Greenfield Road and Mears Lane. The call came in at 7:40 a.m. on June 18, 2023.

Upon arrival, the suspect opened fire at Sgt. Coker, prompting the deputy to return fire in self-defence. Both Sgt. Coker and the suspect, later identified as Obed Barba, 20, sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.

Tragically, Barba succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Sgt. Coker was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. After a period of recovery, Sgt. Coker was discharged from the hospital on June 24, 2023, to the relief and gratitude of his colleagues and community.

PROCLAMATION FOR BRAVERY

In recognition of his exceptional courage and dedication to protecting the citizens of McCormick County, Sgt. Coker was presented with a proclamation honouring his actions during the harrowing incident. The McCormick County Sheriff’s Office took to social media to express their gratitude for Senator Adams’ support in championing the award and reading the proclamation at the Statehouse.

The Sheriff’s Office urged the public to join them in congratulating Sgt. Coker for his unwavering bravery and resilience in the face of danger. The community rallied behind the deputy, praising his commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of McCormick County residents.

This recognition serves as a testament to the selfless dedication of law enforcement officers like Sgt. Robby Coker, who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve their communities.
