Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident unfolded in Kodagu district as a 16-year-old girl met a brutal end at the hands of a man who took her life in a horrific manner. The accused, identified as Prakash, allegedly chopped off the girl’s head and fled the scene after their proposed marriage was called off due to her status as a minor.
The shocking incident took place in Surlabbi village, where the victim, Meena, had recently completed her SSLC examinations. Her engagement with Prakash was fixed for Thursday, but intervention from the Child Welfare Department halted the proceedings. Officials from the department counselled both families about the legal implications of marrying a minor, under the POCSO Act and Child Marriage Act. It was agreed that the marriage would only take place once Meena turned 18.
However, tragedy struck on Thursday evening when Prakash forcibly entered Meena’s house, attacked her parents, and abducted the young girl. In a gruesome act, he severed her head and left the scene with it. Meena’s parents were injured in the altercation, with her mother requiring medical treatment.
Superintendent of Police (Kodagu), Ramarajan K, stated that efforts were underway to apprehend the accused, who is currently at large. A case has been registered against him under Sections 307 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act.
Meena, the victim, was the youngest among her siblings, having three sisters and two brothers. The community is in shock and mourning over the senseless loss of a young life, and justice must be served for Meena and her grieving family.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding minors from forced marriages and the need for stringent enforcement of laws to protect vulnerable individuals in society.
