Police in Newhaven have charged a 29-year-old man with the rape and sexual assault of a teenage girl in a disturbing incident that took place in Denton Woods. The victim, who is under the age of 16, reported the attack to authorities after connecting with the suspect on social media.
The harrowing assault occurred at approximately 7.30am on Friday, May 3, prompting immediate action from law enforcement. Specialist officers provided support to the victim as an investigation was swiftly launched.
The accused, identified as Oliver James of Marine Drive in Bishopstone, was apprehended by police on Saturday evening following the report. James has since been charged with rape and sexual assault, and has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
He is scheduled to appear at Lewes Crown Court on June 3 to face the charges brought against him.
Speaking on the case, Detective Sergeant Nick Green commended the courage of the young victim for coming forward and reporting the distressing incident. He emphasized the ongoing support that she will receive from specialist officers throughout the investigation.
