A tragic incident from nearly five decades ago has finally seen some closure, as advances in DNA testing have led to the identification of the killer of a teenage babysitter in Colorado Springs.

14-year-old Maria Loraine Honzell was found stabbed to death in 1977 while babysitting for her neighbour’s children. Despite a thorough investigation at the time, her killer remained unidentified, and the case went cold.

However, in 2019, new DNA analysis tools were used to find a match, and the perpetrator was identified as William Charles Kernan, Jr, who had passed away in 2010.

After years of waiting for justice, Maria Honzell’s family finally received closure. The Colorado Springs Police Department expressed their pride in providing answers to her loved ones after decades of analysis and investigation.
