Decatur, Alabama (WHNT) – Tragedy struck the Decatur community when a 17-year-old arrived at Decatur-Morgan Hospital with a gunshot wound on Friday, only to succumb to his injuries. The young individual was later identified by the Decatur Police Department (DPD) as the suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred on March 27.

Details of the Incident

The initial incident took place on March 27 at approximately 2:16 p.m. in the 900 block of 10th Avenue. Officers from the Decatur Police Department responded to reports of a shooting and found 23-year-old Jared Bolden at the scene, suffering from gunshot wounds. Bolden was swiftly transported to Decatur-Morgan Hospital, where he tragically passed away due to the severity of his injuries.

During the ensuing investigation, DPD identified the 17-year-old as the primary suspect in the March 27 shooting. However, the teenage suspect evaded capture by detectives at that time.

Subsequent Events

On April 30, a burglary was reported at Bama Pawn in Decatur, resulting in the theft of numerous guns and other items. DPD, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), launched a thorough investigation into the incident.

Fast forward to May 3, when DPD officers responded to another shooting incident, this time on 7th Street Southeast, after a male juvenile arrived at Decatur Morgan Hospital with a gunshot wound. The victim, later identified as the 17-year-old suspect from the March shooting on 10th Avenue, was transferred to Huntsville Hospital for treatment. Regrettably, on May 5, 2024, the teenager passed away from the injuries sustained.

Legal Ramifications

Following the May 3 shooting, a 14-year-old was apprehended and initially charged with first-degree assault and first-degree receiving stolen property. However, with the victim’s demise, the assault charge was upgraded to manslaughter.

DPD’s investigation also uncovered that the vehicle used by the victim to reach the hospital had been reported stolen earlier in February 2024. The authorities linked Kaleb Kirk and three other juveniles to the stolen vehicle, suspecting their involvement in the Bama Pawn burglary as well.

Further scrutiny led to the recovery of stolen firearms at a residence in southwest Decatur, all confirmed to be from Bama Pawn. Kirk was charged with first-degree receiving stolen property and second-degree receiving stolen property, and is currently detained at the Morgan County Jail on a $7,500 bond.

Legal Proceedings

Two other teenagers were also charged with receiving stolen property and were subsequently transferred to the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Facility in Tuscumbia, Alabama, under the supervision of the Morgan County Juvenile Probation Office.

Victoria Thomas was implicated in possession of a stolen firearm and now faces charges of second-degree receiving stolen property. She is detained at the Morgan County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
