A man in Redding, California, was recently apprehended for buying alcohol for a minor in a Shoulder Tap operation conducted by the Redding Police Department. The operation took place on a Friday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the aim of targeting adults who engage in the illegal act of purchasing alcohol for individuals under the legal drinking age of 21.
During the operation, a minor working under the supervision of law enforcement officials approached individuals outside liquor or convenience stores, requesting them to buy alcohol on their behalf. The minor explicitly stated that they were underage and unable to make the purchase themselves.
It was reported that out of the 12 individuals contacted during the operation, only one person, identified as Gavin Ottomeier, a 28-year-old from Idaho, succumbed to the temptation and bought alcohol for the minor. Upon being confronted by the authorities, Ottomeier provided false information regarding his identity.
Subsequent searches conducted on Ottomeier revealed that he was in possession of live ammunition despite having a prior felony conviction, making him a prohibited person from possessing such items. As a result, Ottomeier was taken into custody and booked at the Shasta County Jail.
Legal Consequences
Buying alcohol for a minor carries severe penalties, including 24 hours of community service and a minimum fine of £1,000. In addition to this, being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition further complicates Ottomeier’s legal situation.
It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences individuals face when they choose to engage in illegal activities that endanger the well-being of minors and violate established laws.
