Accident – Death – Obituary News : The bodies of two hikers who were reported missing after embarking on a hike up California’s highest peak, Mount Whitney, have been discovered and identified, as confirmed by authorities.

Tulare County Sheriff’s Office officials informed the Fresno Bee that the individuals in question have been identified as Andrew Niziol, aged 28, a resident of South Lake Tahoe, and Patty Bolan, aged 29. The couple was on an extensive hiking expedition across the state of California when they went missing.

On Monday, May 7, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Inyo County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a distress call regarding two hikers who had not returned from their hike on Mt. Whitney. It was reported that the hikers had planned to descend to the “Notch” with the intention of skiing or snowboarding back to Upper Boy Scout Lake, where they had established their camp. Concern arose when Bolan and Niziol failed to return to camp after several hours, prompting other members of their hiking group to alert authorities.

Search and rescue teams were swiftly deployed, utilizing helicopters and ground teams to locate the missing hikers. Tragically, the bodies of the couple were located five days later on the north face of Mount Whitney, with search crews identifying them as “fall victims” at an elevation of 13,200 feet.

Prior to their ill-fated Mount Whitney excursion, Niziol and Bolan had shared their hiking and snowboarding adventures around Mount Shasta on social media. Despite facing challenges such as inclement weather preventing them from reaching the peak, Niziol expressed his gratitude for the experiences they shared.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office dispatched detectives to Lone Pine in Inyo to recover the bodies, with the Tulare County Coroner’s Office overseeing the retrieval process.

In light of this tragic incident, the National Parks Service website highlights that Mount Whitney, with its highest peak reaching 14,494 feet, is situated within the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Considered the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, a permit system is in place to regulate the number of hikers venturing into the backcountry to minimize environmental impact.

Fox News Digital’s attempts to reach out to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office for further information were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

This heart-wrenching event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities, emphasizing the importance of being adequately prepared and vigilant while exploring nature’s wonders..
