A man named Akinyode Rasaq has been apprehended by the Ogun State Police Command for the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl who was hawking in the Bode Olude area of Abeokuta.
The disturbing incident took place at around 10 am on Sunday, May 5, 2024, when the young girl set out from her home to sell Moi Moi in the neighbourhood.
Reports suggest that the suspect approached the teenage hawker under the guise of purchasing Moi Moi from her. However, after buying N1000 worth of the food item, he refused to pay her immediately, claiming he would settle the bill after consuming the meal.
A police source revealed, “She left home to hawk. The suspect was believed to have chased her and persuaded her to sell the steamed bean cake to him. He insisted she wait for him to finish it before paying.”
Unfortunately, the teenage girl ended up waiting for several hours as the man failed to honour his promise. Eventually, around 1 p.m. that same day, he forcibly took her to his residence in Bode Olude where he reportedly assaulted her before releasing her.
Corroborating the victim’s account, an elderly woman named Nurat, who resides in the same street, supported the hawker’s version of events when the police visited the scene.
State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the arrest of the suspect and his subsequent detention. She stated, “The minor was hawking when the suspect approached her, pretending to buy what she was selling, unknown to the girl that he had a clandestine and evil plan. He forcefully dragged her into his room and defiled the teenage girl. Our men at the Bode Olude Police Division visited the crime scene.”
Following a medical examination of the victim, which indicated signs of forced penetration, the case is set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
