A man has been arrested for the alleged fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl following a high school football game in 2022, according to documents filed in Criminal District Court.
Ulysses Mercadel, aged 25, was taken into custody on Tuesday on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Haven Lodge. Lodge was shot and killed at a party on Franklin Avenue after a high school football jamboree on August 27, 2022.
Police investigations revealed that Lodge and her friends were captured on surveillance footage entering a gas station before heading to the party at Milne Recreation Center in Gentilly, New Orleans. A four-door black sedan was also seen stopping at the gas station, with the driver exiting the vehicle twice, including making a phone call.
The same car was later spotted on surveillance footage driving past the party multiple times before individuals inside the vehicle opened fire at 11:27 p.m., resulting in Lodge being struck and fatally wounded.
Mercadel was identified as the individual in the gas station footage, leading investigators to obtain a warrant for his arrest in September 2023. Subsequently, in July 2023, Mercadel was arrested on a gun charge at a New Orleans Walmart. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 ½ years in federal prison in March.
Currently in state custody, Mercadel had his bond set at $500,000 by Magistrate Judge Juana Lombard on Wednesday. It remains unclear whether Mercadel will serve his federal prison sentence before facing prosecution for the second-degree murder charge by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.
