The kayaker who tragically drowned in Little Bay de Noc has been identified as 29-year-old Tyler Wright from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Wright had been enjoying a kayaking and fishing trip off the coast of Stonington when the incident occurred on Sunday, May 5th.
Wright failed to return to shore, prompting concerns from his friends and family. He was reported missing at 7:00pm that evening, sparking an extensive search operation involving multiple agencies on shore, in the water, and from the air.
During the search, Wright’s empty kayak was discovered floating upside down around 2:00am on Monday, May 6th. Despite continued efforts throughout the day, no further evidence or clues were found.
Discovery of Tyler Wright
The search efforts resumed on Tuesday, May 7th, and it was around 1:00pm that Wright’s body was located in approximately 14 feet of water, roughly half a mile offshore. Tragically, Wright was found to not have been wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, and water temperatures in the area were recorded to be near 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Delta County Sheriff’s Office coordinated the search operation, with assistance from a range of agencies including the Michigan State Police Marine Services Unit, Delta County Search and Rescue, and the United States Coast Guard. Additional support was provided by the Delta County Dive Team, DNR Conservation Officers, and various local emergency response units.
