Accident – Death – Obituary News :

After nearly six decades, the identity of a woman whose body was discovered near Jenner has finally been revealed. Lillian Marie Cardenas was found at the bottom of a steep cliff off Highway 1 on February 3, 1967, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of Cardenas’ death was determined to be multiple fractures to her skull and ribs. However, investigators are still seeking information to understand the circumstances surrounding her demise.

Reports from February 5, 1967, state that a hiker from Berkeley stumbled upon Cardenas’ decomposed and mummified body at the bottom of a 500-foot cliff, located six miles north of Jenner. Despite being 50 feet above sea level, officials speculated that she may have been washed ashore by large waves during high tide.

At the time of discovery, Cardenas was dressed in a blouse paired with light-colored woolen capri pants, but she was barefoot. Her identity remained a mystery, and she was laid to rest as Jane Doe in a local cemetery.

It wasn’t until 2009 that investigators decided to exhume her body. San Francisco State University anthropology professor Mark Griffin conducted an analysis and determined that Cardenas was between 40 and 46 years old at the time of her death. He also concluded that she was a victim of homicide, though the specifics of his findings were not disclosed by the Sheriff’s Office.

Fast forward to early 2023, a DNA analysis finally confirmed Cardenas’ identity. Born in 1928, her last known residence was in San Francisco. Tragically, her surviving family had been estranged from her before her passing.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is now appealing to the public for any information related to Lillian Marie Cardenas. If you have any details that could assist in the investigation, please contact the authorities at 707-565-2727 or email them at sheriff-coldcase@sonoma-county.org.
