SACRAMENTO (KTXL) — A grandfather in Sacramento was arrested on Sunday after allegedly giving a homeless woman £20 to watch his granddaughter while he visited a nearby bar, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Man Claimed Granddaughter was Kidnapped

Reports came in Sunday night about a man asking for help to find his 7-year-old granddaughter who he claimed had been kidnapped. When deputies arrived and met with the man, identified as Jason Warren, they found him to be highly intoxicated. Warren admitted to giving the homeless woman money to take his granddaughter to a nearby thrift store.

Trusting a Stranger

Describing the woman he entrusted with his granddaughter as being around 28 to 30 years old, Warren claimed he could tell by her character that she seemed trustworthy. He later revealed that he stayed at a bar for approximately four hours while the woman looked after his granddaughter.

Guardian Angel Identified

The homeless woman, now known as 34-year-old Lauren Jope, has been hailed as a “guardian angel” by the sheriff’s office. Jope recounted her interaction with Warren, stating that she was initially hesitant due to not knowing who he was but ultimately felt confident in caring for the child.

Search Efforts and Safe Return

After concerns were raised about a possible kidnapping, law enforcement agencies deployed various resources, including helicopters and K9 units, to locate Jope and the young girl. Fortunately, Jope heard the announcements and safely returned with the child to the parking lot where she was initially entrusted with her care.

Legal Consequences

Warren was subsequently arrested and is facing charges of felony child endangerment and other related offences. He is currently being held on a £75,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Despite his actions, Warren maintained that he believed he had done nothing wrong and expressed willingness to repeat his actions.

Child’s Safe Return

Following the incident, the child was reunited with her aunt, who holds full custody, after being cleared by Child Protective Services. The authorities commended Jope for her actions and described her as a true “guardian angel” in the situation.
