Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a breakthrough discovery, skeletal remains found nearly half a century ago in Middle Tennessee have been identified as those of Annie Carolyn Jenkins, a missing Memphis woman last seen in 1974.

The 19-year-old Jenkins was positively identified by volunteers from the DNA Doe Project, who recently made contact with a relative of Jenkins, as reported by the Maury County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, Jenkins had been visiting relatives in Chicago in the autumn of 1974 before boarding a flight to Tennessee. This was the last known contact with her family.

The remains of Annie Carolyn Jenkins were discovered near Interstate 65 in Maury County in February 1975, approximately four hours east of Memphis, south of Nashville.

The DNA Doe Project revealed that Jenkins’ body was found by hunters in a wooded area near Joe Brown Road. Alongside her remains, bones from a puppy were also discovered.

Officials suspect that Jenkins may have been involved in a car accident or fatally struck by a vehicle in the fall of 1974, six to nine months before her remains were found.

Although Jenkins was never officially reported missing, her family never gave up hope of finding her. Her remains had been kept at the University of Tennessee Department of Anthropology since 1975.

The case has been subject to numerous investigations and DNA sampling over the years, with retired Maury County Lt. Jerry Williams reigniting interest in the case in 2012.

The Maury County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation into Jenkins’ death remains open as a homicide case.

This significant breakthrough in identifying Annie Carolyn Jenkins brings hope to families of missing persons and highlights the importance of ongoing efforts in solving cold cases.
